02 - Conventions Of School Magazines

There are certain rules that people tend to follow when creating a successful magazine. These conventions are usually;
- a date
- a logo
- language used (either colloquial or formal)
- colours used
- picture
- bar code
- main title
- slogan

-   The title, this is often at the top of the page and stands out to the reader by using big and bold fonts.
- In this case, there is also a slogan which is above the title, the title and slogan will repeatedly be used regularly in different issues of the magazine so people will recognise the magazine.

- The picture; this picture shows the idea of the magazine for that issue. For example, has a picture of a young footballer on the front. The main text on the front also says 'Shooting Stars'. Possibly showing he is a budding footballer in the issue. 'Stars' is in a larger sized font emphasing it futher, showing that the magazine will be focused on 'stars' eg the footballer as they are often referred too as this. Stars is the key word on the front page so is made bigger for people to notice immeditately.

- Colours; the colours are vital when drawing the attention of readers to the magazine. In this case, the colours aren't that good because they seem dull and unattractive. However, if they were to use brighter colours it may attract people. For example, more yellow colours. If people aren't attracted to the magazine initially they won't buy it or be interested which will affect sales. For example, even if people don't buy the magazine, if they are drawn to it, it increases the chances of people purchasing.

- Language; In this case, this magazine uses 'shooting stars' as the main text seen. They have used the technique of alliteration. This is catchy to begin and will once more draw attention to the magazine.

The negatives with this example are the fact there isn't a bar code or date, portraying it as unprofessional and amateur. Although, if this is a school magazine, this is usually the case. However, they are main conventions and are recognised on many magazines usually.

    Good point. Also consider WHY stars is in a larger point than Shooting.

    The picture;

    Think about the impact of the canted shot too. Why has it been done like this?
