13 - Indie

I have decided that I will focus on Indie so I am going to research the type of bands/musicians that are related with this genre and a brief background of the genre. I enjoy listening to many artists from this genre so it will be enjoyable to create a magazine on.

Indie developed from 'independent' and they are usually small, low-budget labels that have limited appeal to large mainstream audiences. However, in 2000s, the music industry has gradually changed allowing indie artists to grow and gain mainstream success due to using the internet as promotion. An example of this is the ever growing success of Ed Sheeran who is continually getting bigger and bigger in the music industry.

There are many artists that fall into the genre of indie, this include;

- Erik Hassle
- Arctic Monkeys
- Ellie Goulding
- The Script
- Snow Patrol
- City & Colour
- Iglu & Hartly
- Regina Spektor
- Ed Sheeran
- The Kooks
- Lissie
- Mumford and Sons

Indie music is dominate in music festivals such as Glastonbury and V festival. This indicates its target audience due to it being late teenagers and people up to their 30's. These are the type of people who are likely to attend festivals due to their disposable income allowing them to do this. For example, the majority of people in their late teens have part time jobs or some sort of income that allows them to afford to attend these festivals. People any older than this are more likely to not be as interested due to having other financial things to take into consideration. Many people are attracted to this music due to festivals and the environment at them, people often enjoy the laid back lifestyle of festivals which is evident with the type of acoustic music that many of these artists portray. The majority of people are seen to enjoy themselves and enjoy the music.

There is an 'assumed intellegence', this being the stereotypical opinion that listeners are more mature than pop fans that are considered immature due to the style of music.

  1. Well done, Sophie - this is good. You can also think about lifestyle of indie fans.

As well as going to festivals you'd be surprised as to what percentage of them (and the same goes for rock / metal fans) form their own garage bands (that's bands who rehearse in a garage, rather than any musical style).

So there's an 'assumed intelligence' on the part of the fans, to an extent. They are more 'mature' than pure pop fans and enjoy listening to 'real' music, rather than just dance beats.
