15 - Initial Ideas and Extended Research

To gain an idea of images for my magazine and what kind of images i'd like to include I researched images of artists that fall into the indie rock genre. This then allowed me to research further on musicians in the genre and make a mind map and collage of pictures.

This has been helpful because i've been able to look at many different types of images when looking at music along with looking at the indie rock genre as well. I will now be able to take some of these ideas and decide what sort of look I want when taking my own pictures for my magazine.

Examples of NME

Colours
This shows two examples of the magazine NME, showing the colour scheme the majority of the time sticks to red, yellow, white and black. This differs from SmashHits! that stick to the pink, yellow and green shown in the previous example.

The colours used are colours that stand out to the reader. For example, the yellow on black and the NME standard colour is always red with white and black borders to allow it to stand out. The colours relate to the genre because as I stated before, the genre is more 'mature' in comparison to pop with a more mature audience. Pink is usually seen as a more 'immature' colour. The red and black also indicate the rock side of the genre with both images being quite dark. When looking at the image on the right it shows the tartan also being red and black addressing the punk theme but also showing the rocky edge again.

Therefore, looking at this, I am able to gain an idea of colours I'd like to use for my own magazine. NME have shown continuity throughout by keeping to the same colour scheme which is professional. People know what they're looking for when looking at the magazines. However, it could be seen as boring but its the magazines house style.

I don't know as of yet whether I'll stick to the same colours each week because I think it may get too boring, but I will show continuity with the fonts used and keep the colours similar. I know that I want to create the feel of acoustic indie rather than the more grungy and punky style like above. For example, the red and black used. So, on this judgement i'd use pastel colours. To gain a further ideas I shall simply put different colours next to each other to see what works well together to get the best colours possible for my magazine. I would like to create a laid back acoustic feel and colours will show this best.

Fonts
Looking at NME it shows the continuity in the fonts used as well. Looking at the two it shows how even though the one on the left is an older issue it still has similar fonts to the newer one on the right. This shows professionalism throughout the years and that people will associate the font with the magazine. I will try to use this throughout my own magazine.

However, looking at the magazine cover on the right, it shows the a different font when looking at the main title. The text 'Lily Allen Takes On The World' is recognisable and relates to indie rock and the rocky genre of looking at past successful bands such as the Sex Pistols. For example, this is recognisable on the bands album cover, and they were successful in this genre. This will relate the target audience in the magazine.

Here are font ideas I have researched. I really like the fonts here and think I will use them further on in my production. Fonts are important because they indicate the whole image and idea of the magazine. For example, the top one would portray a more rocky element in comaprison to the second one. It's important to chose the correct font to imply what you want to achieve.

Graphics
Looking again at the above image, I quite like images like this that are daring because the Queen is obviously very much respected and people wouldnt usually take a pictre and put text over her eyes and mouth.
