19 - Extended Tropes

Musicians often sing about subjects that people can relate to, for example, love and war. However, an example of a musical trope is that of people listening to music in clubs and bars, those who want to dance to these songs. Sometimes the DJ will not play these loud enough or won't play any music at all. Artists vent their frustrations by singing about it and asking the DJ to play their music and play it louder.

A trope maker in this instance is the initial inspiration to the trope. An example of this is 'Play That Funky Music (White Boy) - Wild Cherry. You can see how this trope has been taken and adapted throughout the years. A more recent adaptation to this is Rihanna and her style of music. Her first big hit was 'Pon De Replay' and it included the lyrics 'Hey Mr. DJ, won't you turn the music up' showing how the trope has progressed and remained.

However, although people follow tropes in the music industry, they also sometimes like deliberately turning a trope on its head and attacking it, to be different in the industry. For example, The Smiths had a song called 'Panic' with the chorus with a catchy refrain "Hang the DJ, hang the DJ".

Another Trope Maker could also be "Having a Party" - Sam Cooke as it keeps to the same idea. This once more shows how powerful tropes are in the industry and in media.
