26 - First Draft Front Cover

Here is my first draft for my front cover. I decided to use the image that showed the background image I analysed earlier, with the earthy feel to it and added a model. However, the model used in my draft is not the same one I will use for the final product, but it gave me an idea of the type of model I want to use. The clothing and attire of the model isn't what I want for my final product but it was just to gain an idea of camera shots and the angle I wanted to create.

I like the idea of the shot being a low angle, showing the whole of the model, perched on the step. The background of grass and trees, along with the blue skies give it a summery feel. This is what I would like to achieve on the actual thing due to the festival feel.

I also wanted the front cover showing an acoustic feel following with the theme of the magazine I want to create. This is why I included the model with an acoustic guitar showing the key elements, acoustic and festivals.

The colours are also what I wanted to achieve. The red and white stand out on the background the majority of the time, however, due to the colours in the picture, it was hard to stop this all the time. For example, the white at the head of the page. The red also works well with the colour of the models top, this wasn't intential but worked well, so I may take this on to my final piece. The mast head stands out due to it being in red, which is also what I wanted to achieve, I want people to notice and for it to stand out. Using capitals has also allowed the cover titles to stand out futher.

Including a free object was something I wanted to do as my focus groups would be attracted if there was free things avaliable so I followed up on this. I made the text big so people are attracted to the 'free' element of it, persuading them to buy the magazine.

I finally decided on a name, being 'Indicle' as its half 'indie' and half 'article' = indicle. Its also quite different so it works as being different from other magazines. I also created a slogan, taken from a musical quote, 'impossible to be silent', showing the love for music people have. They find it impossible to be silent and want to play music.

  1. I think this is a really well done first draft. You have included vital conventions such as the barcode which makes the cover immediately look more professional.

I can also immediately tell the genre of this magazine, mainly because of the image and the masthead font. I would say the target audience would be mixed genders, possibly from ages 16 - 25?

I like the colour shceme also, although, watch it doesn't become difficult to read i.e at the top.

Perhaps you could include a burst, an 'eyecatcher' to catch the audience's eye and to promote short snappy pieces if information.

  3. For your first draft I think this is really good. Your photo really fits the genre and having the font colour match the colour of the clothes of your model really adds to the cover.
The font of the title is also really good. It works well with the indie genre and makes a good impact.
You sale lines work well and the placement of them isn't awkward or making them difficult to read. The colour theme is good and isn't unexpected and "ugly"
    WELL DONE!
