07 - Preliminary School Magazine Contents Page

Here is my initial idea for my contents page for my school magazine. I have once again decided to stick to the simple, yet effective colours of the school, black, red and white to continue the structure from my front page. It also allows people to see the connection between the school and magazine. The three colours also  go well together, the black stands out on the white, as does the red which is also a bold colour.

I have also decided to stick with the same font I began to use on the front cover, once more for continuity throughout the magazine. The font is also has a modern twist, but is also very easy to read by the audience. This makes the magazine look more professional because i've continued with the same style.

When I thought about it, I decided that the best way to do my contents would be to keep it simple. I stuck to the three colours and three pictures simply at the bottom. The three pictures give an indication of the things that will be in the magazine. I went for One Direction and Mr Diggle to give an indication of what else would be in the magazine because to begin with I have mainly focused on the sport aspect of the magazine. This means that people who aren't really interested in sport won't buy the magazine so this then gives them an opportunity to see what else the magazine has to offer. However, all focus groups wanted sport in the magazine, although this does not mean everyone will, just the majority.

The year seven focus group wanted One Direction included so I have also done this to provide for a vast age range, along with including the timetable and revision schedule as well for the older years so that everyone benefits from the magazine.

I decided to put the pictures in a straight line at the bottom and keep it very structured to make it look professional and not 'scruffy'. Although, I have written everything in lower case to make it a little less formal so people will want to read it. If people see a school magazine is very formal they may class it as being boring and this is not what I want.

Overall, for a first attempt at my contents page I am happy with what I've achieved.

  1. Well done on your P2, Sophie. Constructive criticism to follow...

White space - it can be used creatively, but don't over-do it. I wouldn't centre a contents' text because there's too much white either side.

I like the 'trendy' lower case you've used, but remember to be consistant. You can't suddenly drop in cap A and M for Amy Mullett.

I like the font and colour - for the most part the white space would work well.

Not sure about page.. with only two points. Three is normal for elipsis, but I think none would be more in standing with your overall theme.

Also, I'm not sure you'd want or need the points after the page numbers. The numbers are in a larger font and different size, so there's a clash between the hyphen and the point. You could just run the text after the number.

But don't get downhearted on this - it's a great first attempt and I'm just being hyper critical..

Feel free to post back with any comments you want clarifying :-)
